Livium Ltd - Livium expands battery recycling scope with BYD Australia

Livium Ltd has signed an expanded recycling agreement with BYD Australia, a subsidiary of global new energy vehicle leader BYD Company Ltd, which broadens the scope of previously agreed services to now include commercial vehicle batteries and battery energy storage systems (BESS), in addition to New Energy vehicle batteries.

The partnership is also expected to support potential future expansion into New Zealand and the broader Oceania region.

The revised contract came into effect on May 1 and is for an initial three-year term: it highlights Livium’s growing status as a preferred partner for large-scale battery recycling.

Expanded recycling scope and partnership evolution

The new agreement supersedes a prior arrangement signed with BYD Auto Industry Company Limited in 2024. It strengthens the collaboration between Livium and BYD Australia by accommodating a wider array of end-of-life battery types. Under the updated terms, Livium will recycle batteries from commercial vehicles and BESS units, alongside batteries from New Energy vehicles including electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

"Expanding our recycling scope with the BYD Company group in Australia demonstrates the quality of Envirostream’s services. In the short time working together our volume expectations have been exceeded, and we are excited to expand our partnership through this New Agreement. We thank BYD Australia for their confidence in our capabilities and look forward to maintaining our high quality of service," Livium CEO and Managing Director, Simon Linge said.

Contract details and future regional outlook

The agreement runs for an initial three-year period from May 2025, with the option to extend for an additional year. BYD Australia has committed to minimum volumes; however, Livium has withheld financial guidance due to commercial sensitivity. The contract includes standard termination clauses for insolvency events or unresolved breaches.

Beyond Australia, both parties are exploring ways to extend their recycling partnership across New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, and wider Oceania. This initiative remains in planning stages, with Livium aiming to deliver enhanced regional battery recycling capabilities and environmental outcomes.

"We are happy to have entered into a New Agreement with Envirostream. This growing partnership with Livium will enable greater continuity in BYD’s battery recycling efforts, ensuring a greener future for Australians,” BYD Australia general manager, Wing You said.

Strategic alignment with Livium’s business model

This agreement aligns with Livium’s strategic focus on securing long-term battery recycling contracts and diversifying sources of end-of-life batteries. The consistent supply from EV and BESS sectors reinforces Livium’s scalable recycling capacity and supports its ambition to play a key role in the transition to sustainable lithium use.

Livium continues to leverage its recycling division and patented lithium extraction technologies to support global clean energy goals while strengthening its revenue base and supply chain resilience.
